Offshore Mileage Builder: St.Maarten to Barbados

  • Simpson Bay St.Maarten (map)

Kick off the new year with a taste of offshore sailing amongst the Windward Islands of the Caribbean, right out into the open Atlantic where we will find little Barbados! Entirely dependent on conditions, our itinerary is highly flexible but will certainly include some overnight passages, some rest stops in beautiful anchorages, and a heck of a lot of sailing experience in between.

Sailors should expect to participate fully in the running of the boat and will get experience with a wide variety of skills and conditions, with none of the stress of doing it on your own. This provides a great opportunity to gain night sailing hours, offshore helming and navigation and about 370 nautical miles of warm water sailing.

For those who want to mix offshore sailing experience with some racing, check out details below on Booking Package B or the Ultimate Adventure Package!

Pre-Requisites

Sailing experience to a Competent Crew level is required, but to a Day Skipper level is recommended.

Questions? Just ask!

With plenty of cruising but limited offshore experience, I joined Panacea X for the 2024 Antigua-to-Trinidad “mileage builder” delivery to do exactly that: build up my documented sea miles of open-ocean sailing, including night-watches. I will never forget singing a lyric from Stephen Stills’ “Southern Cross” as we lay at anchor at night near Pigeon Island, Guadeloupe. Said First Mate Ben, pointing to the south: “Well, there it is!” I understand now why I came this way. A huge thank-you to Katy, Ben, and my other crewmates for such a wonderful learning experience. I am currently in the process of booking my next engagement with SeaToSky Sailing.

About life on board

This week is an offshore delivery, with the ultimate goal to get Panacea X safely to Grenada on schedule. We may put in one or two rest stops along the way, depending on conditions, but are unlikely to get ashore on these stops.

One thing this offshore mileage builder is not, is a luxury passenger vacation. Your skipper cannot do all things every day, so it’s important to come ready to pitch in and help with all the day- to-day tasks necessary to keep the boat neat and tidy and everyone fed and happy. Everyone should be prepared to take a turn preparing a meal, taking care of dishes, tidying up the cabin and we’ll work together to keep the boat ship shape throughout the cruise. Cabins / double bunks are generally shared, with a lee cloth in place to provide some personal space. This is real sailing, not the glitz of a superyacht!
