Squamish Yacht Club is a small, community-minded club that excels at an aggressively friendly hosting style, making SOAR one of our perennial favourite sailing events.

The Squamish Open Annual Regatta is more accurately described by its acronym.  SOAR is a completely awesome event, sending sailors soaring (oh yes, we went there!) up and down the waters of Howe Sound.  The three day event starts Friday afternoon with the 'inflow race' from Porteau Cove right into Squamish.  This leg is notorious for big wind, flat water and great spinnaker runs as the fleet rides the typically strong summer afternoon breeze blowing up the Sound.

Saturday has us in a tactical day race out of Squamish, playing the lifts and shifts along the sheer cliff walls and enjoying the stunning views of the Stewamus Chief overlooking the race course.  Squamish Yacht Club puts on an excellent party Saturday night, making it hard to leave Sunday morning for the final race back down Howe Sound and towards home.

2019 Outline Schedule

Friday...? Inflow Race & Dock Party
Early in the afternoon (usually around 1pm) we'll head out from our home port in West Vancouver and point our bow towards the start line at Porteau Cove. The 18 mile leg for day 1 takes us right up the Sea to Sky corridor, finishing with the dock party on the river at Squamish Yacht Club
Saturday...?SOAR Day Race
We'll spend a full day on the water as we race to Defense Islands and back, testing ourselves against Howe Sound's traditionally strong winds and spectacular scenery.
Tales will be told and a heck of a lot of food enjoyed at SYC's crew dinner- bring your stretchy pants!
Sunday...?Post-Race Race
Just when you think it's all over, we have one more race ahead of us: the race towards home! We'll cross the finish line at Porteau Cove, stop for a swim if weather permits, then make our way home for a rest.

What to Bring & What to Expect?

Please check the required items listed for live aboard sailing on our FAQ page here.

While we aim to sail our very best on the race course, we offer a fun and supportive learning environment.  No enraged skipper shouting at the crew.  No grim silence as the crew plots a mutiny.  No fits of depression if we don't beat all the other boats.  The Sea to Sky race team is all about improving our own performance both individually and as a team, and doing our best to make every race a positive experience.
