Competent Crew: TWO waysWe are continuing to offer our hugely popular Start Sailing course, getting new students out on the water for 4 days of day sailing. With that under their belts, students are eligible to take our Competent Crew- Condensed course... 3 days of liveaboard training to learn essential cruising skills. This 2-course route is our recommended path to get to the Competent Crew certification since it gives you the most time on the water with expert training for the least cost! However! New in 2020, we will also be offering an entry-level Competent Crew- Full Course. This 5-day liveaboard course is for those who want to jump straight into cruising with no prior experience. This option is ideal for those coming from out of town who want to get their Competent Crew certification in one trip, or those who are training with a partner at the Day Skipper level (these two courses run on the same dates!). New Coastal SkipperWe're very excited to add this new level of training to our RYA program. RYA Coastal Skipper fits perfectly in between the advanced Yachtmaster Prep course and the Day Skipper course. In Coastal Skipper, students have the opportunity to develop their skippering to a higher level from the basics learned in Day Skipper, practicing passage planning and many other critical skills. Yachtmaster PreparationWe will be running two session of Yachtmaster training, one in March and one in October. These are 5-day intensive liveaboard training courses with one of our Yachtmaster Instructors assessing whether students are truly prepared to take the formal exam (which is another 2 days after the course). We will be able to confirm course dates once we have finalized the schedule with the examiner who has to fly in from the UK! In the meantime, it's really essential for students thinking of doing the Yachtmaster training to review the prerequisites and ensure they are definitively at that level of sailing expertise. Registration for Yachtmaster Prep will no longer be available online, as we want to make sure that every student is getting set up for success by reviewing logbooks and qualifications prior to registration… email to start the conversation!
Racing Program Expansion
The very first course we ever ran at Sea to Sky Sailing was our unique Quicker Crew introduction to racing. Since then, we’ve welcomed many students into the exciting world of yacht racing… and now it’s time to provide our racers with a higher level of training.
We’re offering two new levels of spinnaker workshops, in order for students to get a wider breadth of experience with the most troublesome (and fun!) sail. Spinnaker University and Spinnaker Grad School will help our racers gain the skills they need to be even more competitive with us and become valued crew on other local boats. Our Race Team is also growing and offering a graduated ‘Peanut Butter Jelly’Program. We will continue training brand new racers (Team Jelly!) in an easy-going and supportive environment where they can try out different crew positions… while offering more experienced racers (Team Peanut Butter) the opportunity to specialize their crew position and train for a higher level of competition.
Virtual Office Improvement
Sea to Sky is run entirely online, often from a battered phone on deck in the wind and rain! Our resources are far better spent on our fleet and our instructors, but this does mean some students are experiencing delays in getting joining instructions and other information. To remedy this situation, we are now using a booking software that makes the full training calendar visible in one window, makes it easier to book for more than one person and more than one course at a time, sends students the course details they need in a timely fashion, and will also help us manage the training and maintenance schedule much more effectively.
The new software charges a fee per booking, similar to booking with Ticketmaster or services like that. We hope that this change makes joining our courses easier for our students and are certain that it will reduce the time we have to spend on administration so we can spend more time on delivering top quality instruction. We’d love to hear any feedback you have on the new booking experience.
And don’t worry…we will still be available by email (preferred) or by phone to answer specific questions, and beg your continued patience and forgiveness when we aren’t able to answer promptly.
Please also note that we have updated our Cancellation Policy for 2020.
